Prof. Arthur J. Rowland gave a historical sketch of the various methods of incamtescent lighting. Mr. George S. Barrows supplemented the remarks by Professor Rowland with an account of the latest improveulents in the art, used by the \Veisbach Conlpa:ay, and illustrated the subject by exhibiting ~everal improved forms of the Welsbach mantle mid burners, and with a series ~f lantern slides, showing the various steps in the manufacture of the Welsbach mantles.
Mr. 3[oriz Burger, of New Vork, gave a description of the Burger and Ostergren coil machine for lique~,ing air, amt gave an account of the recent researches of Prof. Raoul Pietet in the separation of air into its constituent par:s, and of the industrial uses of oxygen, nitrogen attd carbon dioxide. 'rhi ~ communication was illustrated by nunlerolls experiments.
