Additions to membership since last report, n. The communication of the evening was presented by Dr. Edgar F. Smith, Provost of the University of Pennsylvania, on "How the Chemist Uses Electricity."
After an historical review of the early applications of electricity in the chemical laboratory, the rapid precipitation of metals by the use of the electric current was described and illustrated by numerous laboratory experiments.
Specimens of calcium which had been reduced from the chloride by electrolysis were shown. During the course of the demonstrations a number of novel forms of apparatus, including the rotary anode and the mercury cup, were exhibited.
After an inspection of the various specimens the meeting adjourned. R. B. OWENS,
