โœฆ Synopsis

8571 9. Structure of Crvptosporidiurn oocvsts after ozone exposure. Cryptosporidiurn has come to be recognized as a significant cause of waterborne diarrheal illness.

This protozoan parasite is transmitted via water in the form of environmentally resistant oocysts which are excreted in large numbers with the feces of infected individuals. The oocysts are highly resistant to most chemicals used to disinfect drinking water. CIyptosporidiurn oocysts which had been treated with ozone (1 ppm for 10 min) exhibited near zero excystation and mouse infectivity. These oocysts appeared dark under phase contrast microscopy while untreated oocysts appeared bright and refractile. Ozone treated and untreated oocysts were fixed with formaldehyde-glutaraldehyde, post-fixed with osmium tetroxide, dehydrated with ethanol, and infiltrated and imbedded with Epon. The imbedded oocysts were sectioned and viewed with the TEM. Sporozoites, easily identified within untreated oocysts, were not recognizable within ozone treated oocysts which appeared to contain an amorphous mass. Apparently, ozone penetrates the oocysts' resistant outer wall and destroys the sporozoites within.

Electron probe microanalysis of svnovial tissue. Electron probe microanalysis is a powerful tool for examining the elemental composition of material. In pathology, this method has been employed for a limited number of clinical applications. A previously unexplored use of this technique yielded diagn
