โฆ Synopsis
Methods for the automated analysis of hexose, uranic acid, and protein using the Technicon AutoAnalyzer II have been developed by modifying previously published procedures. A method of separating glucosamine and galactosamine, which is eminently suited to quantitating one in the presence of alarge amount ofthe other, is reported, Procedures that can be recommended for determining the amino acid content and individual neutral sugars of proteoglycans or glycosaminoglycans are also described.

This report describes a microprocedure that may be used for direct measurement of proteoglycans and glycosaminoglycans, after chromatographic elution with chaotropic reagents. The assay is based on the ability of the sulfated glycosaminoglycans to bind to the cationic dye, dimethylmethylene blue, in
## Abstract Medial and lateral knee menisci were obtained from 20โweekโold pigs, dissected into three zones of equal width, and analyzed for collagen and glycosaminoglycan content and for types of glycosaminoglycan and proteoglycan. The thin inner zones contained about 76% collagen and 8% glycosami
The roles of glycosaminoglycans and proteoglycans in the physiology of the urinary tract are reviewed. The structures of proteoglycans and glycosaminoglycans are reviewed together with their role in control of epithelial differentiation through stromal-epithelial interactions and as modulators of cy
