โœฆ Synopsis

The presence of up to 5% of a ferromagnetic martensitic phase has been detected in an En 58B stainless steel, used as the former of a superconducting solenoid, after repeated cool-downs to 4"2 K. This observation is in direct contradiction to previously reported structural studies of the US equivalent of this material (AISI 321), leading to the conclusion that the detailed alloy specifications of all supposedly austenitic stainless steels should be critically re-examined in relation to their low temperature stability.
