โœฆ Synopsis

Basil Gildersleeve's long and colorful career as a soldier and professor of Classics is almost as interesting as his careful and foundational work on the structure and grammar of Ancient Greek and editions of several works in both Greek and Latin. In this essay, he explores several difficulties in the codification of Greek syntax, and includes an introductory paragraph that expresses his thoughts on the value of grammatical studies. Although Gildersleeve claims his paper will be a dry survey of grammatical difficulties, it is a delightfully accessible essay engagingly written that will prove as unintimidating to the student of Greek grammar as it is informative. Not only does Gildersleeve express his opinions on problematic grammar, but he invites his reader to engage with them problem themselves. This is the work of a teacher as well as a grammarian and remains enriching for all ranges of Greek readers.
