✦ Synopsis
The effect of an applied magnetic field on a spectral hole burned in the R, line of [ Cr(bpy),]'+/glycerol is measured. The hole spreading observed deviates considerably from a behaviour expected for a trigonal system. A model taking into account a distribution of low symmetry fields provides far better agreement with experiment. The same approach was previously applied to describe the large variation of the *E splitting in various amorphous systems.
