X-ray spectral measurements provide a direct probe of the inner environment of the central engine in AGN. I will present some recent advances in the field, with a particular emphasis on broad band spectral measurements by BeppoSAX, that allow to single out the spectral features imprinted by the rich environment in the nucleus and to unfold the naked intrinsic continuum.
