Abstract
The strong interaction of metal nanoparticles with light makes it possible to detect individual particles by farβfield optical methods. In this article, the interaction of a metal nanoparticle with a short laser pulse is discussed, with the emphasis on the coherent excitation of mechanical (acoustic) modes and the optical detection of these vibrations. The literature on acoustic vibrations of single metal nanoparticles of different shapes (spheres, dumbbells, rods, cubes, wires, prisms) is reviewed, and the modes that have been excited and detected in these particles are discussed. Finally, the insights and potential applications enabled by these studies are summarized.
