✦ Synopsis

It is demonstrated that xenon can be used as a tracer for the extraction of structure information in microheterogeneous amorphous polymer systems by means of two-dimensional NMR spectroscopy. lZ9Xe nuclei act as probes for structural heterogeneity. Experiments were performed on two model blends consisting of atactic polystyrene with atactic poly(viny1 methyl ether) and atactic poly(viny1 chloride) with atactic poly(viny1 methyl ether), respectively. The NMR measurements are interpreted using the concept of an effective translational diffusion rate constant, taking into consideration the controlled morphology and lenphscale of the heterogeneity in the systems under investigation.
