✦ Synopsis

The various ways in which the forest cover may influence the atmospheric and soil processes controlling the hydrological cycle are examined. Case studies of extensive deforestation affecting the rainfall pattern are reviewed. * However, a recent declining trend of rainfall has been reported even for Cherrapunji. In the wake of intensified shifting cultivation and consequent shortening of the fallow period from 25-20 years to 3-4 years, this hill station faces severe water shortage in winter.

## Abstract In especially arid/semi‐arid regions, wetlands are steadily destroyed or converted into other forms of land use due mainly to population and socio‐economic growth. The accurate estimation of catchment hydrological processes is therefore vital not only for sustainable land/water resource
