An important development on the private psychiatric hospital sector scene in recent years in Australia has been the emergence of the SPGPPS. This acronym stands for Strategic Planning Group for Private Psychiatric Services. It is a group initiated by the College in association with the Australian Medical Association that brings together all the major players involved in providing private psychiatric inpatient service to Australians. The first gathering occurred in early 1995 although the group was not formalised until August 1996.
