✦ Synopsis

This paper examines the concept of using an array of holes in a substrate for antenna performance impro¨ement. The finite-difference ( ) time-domain FDTD numerical technique is used to demonstrate the utility of the concept. The results clearly show the substantial radiation performance impro¨ement of printed antennas by loweringrcontrolling the effecti¨e dielectric constant of a substrate by perforating it with an array of holes.
