✦ Synopsis

The Hamiltonian for a free nucleon coupled to an uncharged scalar meson field is transformed to normal modes after dropping all term~ higher than quadratic in the (field and particle) variables. The resulting normal modes represent scattering states and the "runaway solutions" well-known from the corresponding electromagnetic case. whereas no excited states oI the nucleon occur.
