โฆ Synopsis
This is a beautifully produced book on the vast majority of topics relevant to the locomotor problems of the elbow. The illustrations are superb throughout, both in full colour photographs, and the black-on-grey anatomical dissections.
Chapter 1 gives an excellent account of the exposures for elbow operations, and chapter 2 gives a brief resume of the techniques for elbow arthroscopy.
The chapters dealing with fractures around the elbow are set out in a format very well suited to the trainee orthopaedic surgeon, with indications, contra-indications, planning, techniques and technical tips for each of the common fractures around the elbow, as well as brief discussion on the postoperative regimes, results and complications.
The chapters on nerve entrapments, ligament problems in the sportsman, and the problems of epicondylitis are very comprehensive, and well referenced.
Elbow arthroplasty is dealt with in several chapters, covering total joint arthroplasty, humero-ulnar arthroplasty, constrained arthroplasty, as well as the much less common procedures of distraction arthroplasty and interposition arthroplasty. These chapters give excellent accounts of the different types of joint replacement operations for the elbow, although specific prostheses are described and used by the authors, without producing comparisons with other designs of prosthesis. The reference lists are also similarly restricted.
Overall, this is one of the only texts specific to the elbow, and I would say it should be essential reading for the trainee in orthopaedic surgery for the excellent surgical techniques for elbow surgery it covers.
