โœฆ Synopsis

SPONTANEOUS small-intestinal volvulus is common i n some vegetarian populations in Africa (Kerr and Kirkaldy-Willis, 1946) and in India (Banerji, 195 I) in districts where a bulky farinaceous diet is taken. This precipitating factor is absent in European countries and the condition of spontaneous (primary) volvulus of this reach of the intestine is stated to be extremely rare (Aird, 1957). Only 3 of 37 cases of small-bowel volvulus at the Mayo Clinic were primary (McKechnie and Priestley, 1936). It is felt, therefore, that the following case report may be of interest.
