โฆ Synopsis
Forty-tbur measurements of net primary productivity by 1~C fixation were made at a station near Barbados, West Indies, over a period of 22 months; in addition 12 measurements were made at 7 deep-water stations in the tropical Western Atlantic Ocean. Average daily production was 0.288 g C/m 2 and estimated annual net production t05 g C/mL There was no evidence of seasonal variations in the rate of primary production nor of significant differences between production at the principal station and the additional deep-water stations. The data &re, therefore, considered to be representative of the rate of primary production in this part of the tropical Western Atlantic Ocean and not significantly affected by proximity to land.

The aim of the present study is an evaluation of the applicability of biogenic barium as a proxy for productivity. For this purpose, 190 surface sediment samples from the South Atlantic Ocean were analysed for their barium and aluminium concentrations. Biogenic barium is estimated by subtracting the
## Abstract In this work, the diurnal evolution of the radiation balance components over the tropical Atlantic Ocean is described and analysed. The analysis is based on measurements carried out on board a Brazilian Navy ship during the observational campaign of the FluTuA Project (โFluxos Turbulent
