In Lanarkshire (population 560 000) an area-wide diabetes database was introduced and process of care was measured. The number of patients with diabetes identified was 11 621 (prevalence = 2.08). In 1997 50 % of the diabetic population were reviewed at least once during the year. Compared to those a
