Abstract
In his capacity as Honorary Chairman of the Diabetes Industry Group (DIG), Arun Baksi (Isle of Wight) welcomed delegates to the conference on behalf of both DIG and Primary Care Diabetes UK. Dr Baksi described PCD UK as a national organisation promoting integration between primary and secondary care in diabetes. DIG was a unique example of collaboration between pharmaceutical companies for the general good of diabetes.
Opening the conference Peter Tasker (Chairman, PCD UK) referred to the enormous changes in the NHS seen in the last 18 months, including a new Secretary of State, NHS Direct and Walk‐In Centres, NHS framework targets, financial changes and the introduction of PMS. There have been challenges and successes relating to PCGs/PCTs and the many examples of initiatives such as corporate involvement and active inclusion of PCTs and Health Authorities. Dr Tasker defined the way forward as an exploration of the organisation of diabetes care. Copyright © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
