ORGANIZATION OF THE SUNFLOWER MARKET

Sunflower production increased significantly after 1970 and is centered largely in the upper Midwest. In 1984, major producing states included (figures in parentheses indicate the percentage of U. S. production): North Dakota (75.6), South Dakota (14.8), Minnesota (8.4), and Texas (1.2). In recent years sunflower production has increased in Kansas, Nebraska, and Texas but there has been a general reduction in production largely due to the increasing attractiveness of wheat and barley which are the major alternative crops and which are highly dependent upon government programs. Government programs do not exist for sunflower. In the major producing region producers are highly participative in farm programs. The attractiveness of these programs has an adverse influence on nonprogram commodities.

Sunflower is used to produce a high-valued oil and a lower-valued meal relative to soybeans. Sunflower is high in oil content with extraction rates of about 39 percent as
