✦ Synopsis

405 contained 1.o8 per cent. of carbon, but microphotographs of the metal around a small cavity in the upper part of the axis of the ingot showed that some of the metal had been converted into white cast-iron (about 3 per cent. of carbon) whilst the eutectic areas must have contained more than 4.3 per cent. of carbon.
