## Abstract To explore the clinical significance of restless legs syndrome (RLS) in Parkinson's disease (PD) and the causal relationship between these two disorders, we made a comparison of both the prevalence of RLS and the severity of sleep disturbance manifested on the Pittsburg Sleep Quality In

β¦ Synopsis
We read with interest the recent report by Nomura and colleagues. 1 Their study provided extensive data on the prevalence and clinical characteristics of restless legs syndrome (RLS) in Japanese patients with Parkinson's disease (PD). They found 20 PD patients who also had a diagnosis of RLS, but only 2 of them (10%) had a positive family history of RLS.
We reviewed the Mayo Clinic Jacksonville computerized clinical database for patients with diagnoses of PD and RLS from 1 January 2005 to 30 April 2006. We found 25 Caucasian patients diagnosed as having both PD and RLS, 8 (32%) of whom reported a positive family history of RLS. We also follow a 125-member Caucasian kindred with Parkinsonism, essential tremor (ET), and RLS. Of the 22 affected members in this kindred, 6 have been diagnosed as having PD alone, 4 have ET alone, 6 have RLS alone, 4 have both PD and ET, and 2 have both PD and RLS. 2 Therefore, we believe that the suggestion by Nomura and colleagues 1 that "RLS in PD patients does not occur on a genetic basis" may not be accurate for the Caucasian population.

## Abstract Parkinson's disease (PD) and restless legs syndrome (RLS) have a dopaminergic link. More insight in the clinical profile of RLS in patients with PD may benefit our understanding of this link. The aims of this study were to evaluate the frequency and clinical profile of RLS in a large co
We report on 6 advanced Parkinson's disease (PD) patients who underwent bilateral subthalamic nucleus (STN) deep brain stimulation (DBS) surgery whose restless legs syndrome (RLS) improved postoperatively. Despite a mean 56% decrease in their levodopa equivalents postoperatively, their RLS scores dr

## Abstract Substantia nigra (SN) hyperechogenicity assessed by transcranial brain sonography (TCS) is a characteristic finding in idiopathic Parkinson's disease (PD). In contrast, SN hypoechogenicity on TCS has been recently demonstrated in restless legs syndrome (RLS). RLS is one of the most comm
## Abstract Although restless legs syndrome (RLS) commonly accompanies Parkinson disease (PD), the mechanism of RLS development in PD is still unclear. We investigated the prevalence of RLS in Korean patients with PD, and the possible contributing factors to the development of RLS in those patients
