✦ Synopsis
The preparing condition of the starting powder for ex situ MgB 2 tape has been investigated in order to know the key parameter for the fabrication of the tape with excellent J c -B performance. The results reveal the importance of the pelletizing pressure for the precursor mixture of the starting MgB 2 powder. The higher the pressure increases, the higher the J c of end-product ex situ MgB 2 tape increases. The experimental results for the resistivity measurements show the improvement in the grain connectivity of MgB 2 core made from highly pressurized pellet. Previous study already reveals that changing the crystallinity, which controls the lattice distortions and thus the B c2 , of prepared MgB 2 powder is not much effective on enhancing the J c of end-product ex situ tape. Therefore we believe that, for obtaining tape with excellent J c -B performance in future, improving the grain connectivity is more important issue than controlling the lattice distortion in MgB 2 .
