โœฆ Synopsis

The effect of hydrostatic pressure on the magnetocrystalline anisotropy energy in transition metals has been discussed from a view point of the band picture.

A formula was derived for the contribution of change in the magnetization associated with the application of hydrostatic pressure. It was shown that the magnetization dependent term is of the same intensity as the contribution of redistribution of electrons in doubly degenerate bands due to the spin-orbit interaction. Experimental values of dK/dp in iron, cobalt and nickel were well explained as the sum of these two terms.
