โœฆ Synopsis

In Japan, the research and development of ion-exchange membrane and electrodialysis was mainly directed to sea water concentration. After about 20 years efforts, the performance of ion-exchange membrane becomes superior, and electrodialysis becomes one of the most stable technology. Japan Tobacco and Salt Public Corporation (previous name, Japan Monopoly Corporation) and the three soda manufacturing companies made an effort to produce foodgrade salt commercially with sea water concentration by electradialysis. The seven salt manufacturing companies now produce foodgrade salt (about 1 million ton a year) under the protection of monopolization.

In 1993, a new 4-year solar cell R&D program toward the key objectives of achieving stabilized module efficiency of 8.5% for amorphous Si solar cells and small area efficiency of 15% for Cu(InGa)Se2 based solar cells (CIGS) has been initiated in Japan. The outline of the 4-year program (1993)(1994)(
