Preparation of highly substituted rigid tricyclic nitrogen heterocycles via a tandem four-component condensation (4CC)/intramolecular Diels-Alder (IMDA) reaction has been studied both in solution and solid phase. Influence of electronic and steric effects on the product formation has also been investigated.
