✦ Synopsis

New azobenzene crown ether p-tert-butylcalix [4]arenes (6 and 7) have been synthesized by reductive coupling reactions between two nitrobenzene groups. Their isomerization and switchable binding properties towards Na + and K + were studied by 1 H NMR spectroscopy. The results showed that Na + preferred to bind the cis form of 6 while K + preferred to bind the trans isomer.
