O-tert-Butyldimethylsilylated (O-TBDMS)

or O-triethylsilylated (O-TES) alcohols were converted in one step to their corresponding formates under Vilsmeier-Haack conditions (POC13/DMF). The scope and limitations of this novel reaction for interconverting alcohol protecting groups are described.
