## Abstract The polarized Raman and IR spectra of Mg(NH~4~)~2~(HPO~4~)~2~·4H~2~O and its partially deuterated polycrystalline sample were recorded and analysed. The presence of bands characteristic of HPO^2−^~4~ and DPO^2−^~4~ ions are interpreted in terms of the proton polarizabilities of the HPO^
