✦ Synopsis
A coating procedure using preformed indium (hydrous) oxide particles dispersed in aqueous solutions of hafnium oxychloride in the presence of sulfate ions is described. The concentration of the latter controls the thickness of the hafnium (hydrous) oxide shell produced. Above a certain concentration of (\mathrm{Na}{2} \mathrm{SO}{4}) a mixed dispersion is obtained. On calcination at (800^{\circ} \mathrm{C}) the core and the coating of the composite particles are converted to the corresponding oxides. 1993 Academic Press, Inc.

Monolayer tungsten oxide on silica particles was prepared by a controlled hydrolysis technique. The material displays a bandgap which is 0.3 eV higher in energy than that for bulk W09. The quasi-Fermi level for electrons, in this material, as determined by electrochemical measurements, is 170 mV mor
