## Abstract Organophilic montmorillonite (MMT) was prepared by ion exchange between Na^+^ ions in the clay and twin benzyldimethyloctadecylammonium bromine cations in an aqueous medium. The organophilic MMT particles were easily dispersed and swollen in styrene monomer. Polystyrene–MMT nanocomposit
