β¦ Synopsis
Liquid crystalline poly(Schiff bases) have been synthesized by condensing a non-mesogenic aldehyde moiety with o-and m-phenylenediamine, 4,4'-diaminodiphenylmethane and 4,4'-diaminodiphenyl ether. The polymers were characterized by i.r. spectroscopy, viscosity measurements, differential scanning calorimetry and optical polarizing microscopy. Variation of the chemical structure was found to be an important factor for the occurrence of mesomorphic properties.
