β¦ Synopsis
(\mathrm{Fe}{2} \mathrm{O}{3}, \mathrm{Mn}{2} \mathrm{O}{3}), and their mixtures are reduced by carbon in nitrogen. The product depends on manganese loading. A cohenite li (\mathrm{c}{3} \mathrm{C}) type phase is stabilized by substituting manganese into the lattice. A single phase cohenite phase solid solution (\mathrm{Fe}{3-x} \mathrm{Mn}{x} \mathrm{C}) is prepared for (20-50 %) manganese loading, and a (\mathrm{Fe}{7} \mathrm{C}{3}) type phase can be obtained with manganese loading of (65-80 %). The nitrogen participates in the reduction of the manganese-rich oxide mixtures. A manganese carbonitride is obtained by heating the mixture of (\mathrm{Mn}{2} \mathrm{O}{3}) and carbon in nitrogen. The composition of the new compound is analyzed as (\mathrm{Mn}{2} \mathrm{C}{0.60} \mathrm{~N}{0.21}) and it has a hexagonal structure with (a_{0}=4.778 \AA) and (c_{0}=4.486 \AA). ## Abstract We have studied the detailed reaction mechanism of iron and manganese superoxide dismutase with density functional calculations on realistic activeβsite models, with large basis sets and including solvation, zeroβpoint, and thermal effects. The results indicate that the conversion of O
