✦ Synopsis
The thermal and flame-retardant properties of homo-and copolyimides were evaluated. Those containing sulfone linkages in the backbone were found to be more flame retardant. Both properties were dependent on the composition. A polyimide/ silica nanocomposite was obtained through sol-gel processing. The effects of the addition of silica on the dispersion, interfacial adhesion, fire resistance, mechanical properties, and thermal stability of the composites were investigated. SEM analysis showed a good dispersion of silica with a diameter of 50 -300 nm in the organic matrices. The addition of silica increased the fire retardancy and mechanical properties of the composites.

Organosoluble montmorillonite/polyimide hybrids were prepared using a monomer solution intercalation polymerization method. Montmorillonite was organotreated with p-aminobenzoic acid and the organosoluble polyimide was based on pyromellitic dianhydride and 4,4Ј-diamino-3,3Ј-dimethyldiphenylmethane.
## Abstract A series of polymer–clay nanocomposite (PCN) materials consisting of 1,4‐bis(4‐aminophenoxy)‐2‐__tert__‐butylbenzene–4,4′‐oxydiphthalic anhydride (BATB–ODPA) polyimide (PI) and layered montmorillonite (MMT) clay were successfully prepared by an __in situ__ polymerization reaction throug
A polyimide powder was prepared from 3,3',4,4'-biphenyl tetracarboxylic dianhydride (BPDA) and 4,4'-oxydianiline (ODA). Polyimide powder having low molecular weight was prepared by imidizing low-molecular-weight polyamic acid. The molecular weight of this polyimide powder increased on heating in a s
