โœฆ Synopsis


Sacrococcygeal teratoma (SCT) is a rare congenital tumor which can lead to fetal or neonatal death.'-$ Prenatal diagnosis is rarely reported, yet on one occasion it has led to prompt neonatal intervention and subsequent survival.' Although nine cases of SCT have been reported in which the tumor mass was seen on a prenatal ultrasonic e v a l u a t i ~n , ' -~* ~-~ in only four of these was the diagnosis of SCT considered prior to delivery. 1-6

The following is the only reported prenatal presentation of SCT as a unilocular anechoic caudal mass. This case report and review illustrate an unusual ultrasonic appearance of SCT and summarize the clinical behavior of this rare congenital tumor in order to facilitate prenatal and postpartum counseling.
