✦ Synopsis

The German-Ukrainian Symposium on Nanoscience and Nanotechnology took place at the University of Duisburg-Essen from 22.-25.09.2008. It stood in the tradition of a number of earlier binational meetings on nanobiotechnology in Kiev (2006) and Mu ¨nster (2007). In 2008, it was decided for the first time to broaden the scope of the symposium to cover all aspects of nanoscience and nanotechnology. This was strongly supported by the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences and the German Federal Ministry of Science and Technology. The location in Essen was also well chosen because nanotechnology is a field of excellence at the University of Duisburg-Essen as represented by the Centre for Nanointegration Duis-burg-Essen (CeNIDE). More than 100 participants attended this binational meeting, about half of them from Ukraine, the other half from Germany.

In this issue of Materialwissenschaft und Werkstofftechnik you will find 20 contributions from the symposium, many of them with binational author lists. All manuscripts underwent peer reviewing with two reviewers, typically one from each country. They show the high level of science presented at the meeting and also the potential for future collaborations in this area between the two nations. I personally hope that these will continue to flourish in good and also in bad economic times.
