✦ Synopsis

The field of biomaterials is in a phase of rapid innovative change. Thus at the 12 th International and Interdisciplinary NRW Symposium discussions centered on the suggested novel definition of biomaterials [1] which will be repeated here: "A Biomaterial is a technically fabricated state of matter, usually a solid, of defined structure, surface properties and function for a species-adapted biocompatible interaction with living organisms."

Although this does not change our opinions on the four basic materials in implantology asthere are metals, ceramics, polymers and biomolecular materials, but it does shift the emphasis somewhat from the materials themselves to the surface properties and functions in a biocompatible in vivo setting. Thus the papers submitted to this volume reflect this development and range from simulations of protein adsorption on surfaces, to material development in the area of metals and polymers including the conservation of metallic surfaces and finally focussing on current concepts in biocompatibility testing and material evaluation in animal models. Further details on the meeting can be gained from the abstract volume [2]. Last not least we want to extend our thanks to the Editorial Office under Dr. J. Ellermeier for his support and for again giving us the opportunity of publishing a proceedings volume of our Symposium in this journal.
