✦ Synopsis
In applymg reverse osmosis for water desaltmg, it IS of considerable interest to predict the degree of rejection of various ions by a particular membrane Hodgson [l] and Sourlrajan et al. [ 2-41 have developed an analytical technique for predicting the rejections of the individual ions from an aqueous solution of more than one salt, given the rejection data of the m&vldual salt solutions This paper hlghhghts an mconslstency present m the above prediction technique. The assumed physical model results m a set of equations m which the number of mdependent equations exceeds the number of unknowns Hodgson [ 1 ] overcomes this difficulty by assuming equal dlffuslvltles, in which case the number of equations equals the number of unknowns Sourlrajan [ 2-41 overcomes the difficulty by predicting the rejections of all ions except one and using the electro-neutrality condition for the last ion Consequently, the flux balance equation IS not satisfied
The modification proposed m this paper overcomes the above difficulties and results in a well-paused set of equations and unknowns
