✦ Synopsis


A method of finding the normal modes and natural frequencies of multi-span transmission lines by using assumed modes is described, and the assumptions and limitations discussed. Kinetic and potential energy expressions are first of all formulated for a single-span catenary and then applied to provide the equations of motion in the multi-span case. Conveniently, the lateral motion is uncoupled from motion in the vertical plane and the appropriate equations are treated separately. In the lateral case, use is made of Rauscher or piecewise linear interpolation modes in order to couple mathematically two adjacent spans at a suspension point. Numerical results are obtained for a full-size practical system, compared with available test results, and discussed.
