The equilibrium coefficient of organic solutes between interfacial water and bulk water phases obtained from liquid chromatography experiments is related to the structure of the solute molecule and the repeating unit of the polymer. The equilibrium coefficient is further related to the force constants associated with the interaction forces, such as steric effect and the van der Waals force, working between polymer surface and the solute molecule. The force constants, together with the pore size and the pore size distribution, enable one to predict the reverse osmosis and ultrafiltration performance data.

RESUME

On relie le coefficient d'equilibre de solut& organiques entre les phases constitu6es par l'eau interfaciale et l'ensemble de l'eau. obtenu lors d'experiences en chromatographie en phase liquide, a la structure de la mol& cule du solut6 et de l'uniti montire du polym&-e. On relie 6galement le coefficient d'equilibre aux constantes de forces associces aux forces telles aue l'effet st6riaue et les forces de Van der Walls aui interviennent entre la s'urface du polydre et la mol6cule de solut6. Les cdnstantes de forces ainsi que la taille des pores et la distribution des tailles permettent de pr&oir les don&es sur le rendement de l'osmose inverse et de l'ultrafiltration.
