โฆ Synopsis
This article examines the self-reported target techniques of 61 sexual offenders incarcerated in a maximum custody prison. Respondents were interviewed using a methodology employing other convicted felons as interviewers. The data lend support to a rational choice perspective revealing predatory rapists as decision makers since they largely attack females whom they perceive as vulnerable. In light of these findings, research is needed curbing fallacies leading to victim vulnerability. To what extent does rational choice perspectives relate to victim selection processes of predatory rapists? Rational choice perspectives would argue that "rational" emphasizes strategic thinking--of processing information, of evaluating opportunities and alternatives for criminals; "choice" emphasizes the idea that criminals make decisions, however irrational and l~athological components in some crimes do exist. Also, as Cornish and Clarke postulate, the rational choice perspective is not intended as a theory but as an organizing framework--a way of rearranging existing theory and data to throw new light on criminal behaviors. Thus, curious about the relationship between rational choice perspectives and predatory rape selection--a reference to sexual activity by an unknown male attacker with a female without her informed or legal consent, this paper investigates the methods utilized by predatory rapists to select victims?
