✦ Synopsis

Abstract

In vitro testing for in vivo purposes is considered with reference to the preclinical evaluation of polymers used as membranes in haemodialysis and polymers used to coat activated carbon granules for haemoperfusion. The respective roles of the polymer membrane and polymer coating are contrasted.

The design of haemodialysis membranes and the assessment of dialysis, ultrafiltration and mechanical properties and blood compatibility are examined. Blood compatibility assessment is described in terms of a procedure for estimating platelet retention.

The selection of polymer coatings for activated carbon granules is considered. The in vitro testing of coatings is described by reference to techniques for estimating the influence of a polymer coating on solute removal rates by adsorption, the generation of fine carbon particles and blood compatibility.
