**Reviewer:**Gary B Kaniuk, Psy.D.(Cermak Health Services)
**Description:**This book provides practical answers to the questions of how to assess and treat specific psychological disorders. As the title suggests, it emphasizes evidence-based guidelines in addressing each disorder.
**Purpose:**In the introduction, the editors state: We view this book as a contribution to the unmet quality improvement agenda in behavioral health. We by no means think that it can stand alone or that it does most of the work that needs to be done. On the back cover, the purpose is more plainly stated, most likely by the publisher: Designed to bring ready answers from scientific data to real life practice, [this book] is an accessible, authoritative reference for today's clinician.
**Audience:**It is designed to help clinical psychologists, clinical social workers, psychiatrists, and counselors achieve the maximum in service to their clients. Concise and up-to-date, it also serves as an excellent student guide.
**Features:**The book lists the 73 disorders in alphabetical order. Each chapter contains the same general elements: what is... (agoraphobia, or malingering, or posttraumatic stress disorder, etc.); basic facts; assessment; treatment. The information is invaluable for clinicians who want to know the latest guidelines on what works and what does not. The first chapter provides serious discussion around quality healthcare and how evidenced-based practice (EBP) is defined, along with a review of the literature surrounding EBP. The editors also discuss clinical practice guidelines and quality improvement. The book lists plenty of applicable websites as well. This book is extremely helpful because it covers so many areas. Obviously, it is not meant to be exhaustive, but it is a wonderful springboard from which you can begin a diligent search for more information.
**Assessment:**This is excellent reading for clinicians in the field. It provides the latest clinical practice, both in terms of treatment and assessment. Graduate students in clinical/counseling psychology and/or social work will gain greatly from this book. It covers a wide range of disorders, is easy to read and practical. It contains everything you need to know about evidenced-based psychotherapy, especially in the era of health maintenance organizations and vigilant monitoring of the bottom line.
