β¦ Synopsis
EDITORIAL.
l~OTIOE.--The publication of the JOURNAL is made under the direction of the Editor and the Committee of Publication, who endeavor to exercise such supervision of its articles, as will prevent the inculcation of errors or the advocacy of special interests, and will produce an instructive and entertaining periodical; but it must be recognized that the Franklin Institute is not responsible, as a body, for tile statements and opinions advanced in its pages.
Practical Information for Practical Men.--The general idea that practical information useful to a practical man can be made interesting or instructive to the ordinary reader, is an altogether erroneous one. Admitting that the experienced workman in any position in the scale of productive labor desires information relating to the advances in theory or practice in his particular field of labor or description of product, it must .be asserted that as regards both Iheory and practice he is in his way fully informed already--quite as ,thoroughly as any general instructor likely to offer to inform him-land he will not tolerate the kind of incomplete description and im-Iperfect reasoning which passes for knowledge to the uninitiated. He Itemands that his informant shall start from his standpoint and make bvailable his basis of facts and experience in the attempt to commulaicate that which was hitherto unknown or unappreciated, but it is ~ow essayed to make known and comprehensible.
