Modulation instability MI effects are analyzed in the context of WDM optical communication systems. We show how the interplay between four-wa¨e mixing and modulation instability results in a modulation of the channel power as a function of the channel spacing as well as the propagated distance. This modulation can cause se¨ere power penalties.
