✦ Synopsis

The analytical potential of using mlcelle-mediated procedures for the sampling and preconcentratlon of polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) m water was mvestlgated The effect of micellar systems on the stabdlty of several PAH-containing water samples, stored m different container materials, were studied It was found that the presence of mlcelles m the sample was as effective as acetomtnle at a concentration of 40% (v/v) m preventing loss of PAHs due to adsorption on the surface of PTFE or borosdlcate glass contamers In addltlon, the usefulness of such mlcellar systems for extraction and preconcentratlon was demonstrated by the observed increase m the recovery of PAHs from waters containing mlcelles on a typical C,s cartridge The possible advantages of mlcelles over organic solvents for sampling and preconcentratlon of PAHs m water-borne envnomnental samples 1s also discussed

Analysis of sub-ppb levels of polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in drinking water by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) fluorescence detection typically requires large water samples and lengthy extraction procedures. The detection itself, although selective, does not give compound
