β¦ Synopsis
A knowledge of the ground state potential energy curves of homonuclear diatomic molecules and some information about the equilibrium contigurations and energies of the homonuclear triatomics leads to a qualitative understanding of the structures of larger elemental clusters. From more detailed knowledge of the potential energy surfaces of small clusters it is possible to develop a many-body espansion of the potential function for large clusters which is convergent for most configurations of chemicai interest_

## Abstract The manyβbody expansion of the potential energy function of elemental clusters is examined in general terms in regard to its convergence for microclusters and the bulk phase. The systems Be~__n__~ and Li~__n__~ are examined in detail. For Li it is clear that the manyβbody expansion has
