A remarkable feature of potato breeding in the Netherlands is the great number of private breeders who have concentrated their efforts on the improvement of the potato .

The author calls attention to some circumstances and measures that have made potato breeding attractive in the Netherlands . 2 . THE EARLIEST DATA ON POTATO BREEDING IN THE NETHERLANDS When about 225 years ago the potato was accorded a modest place in Dutch agriculture and horticulture, use was made of tubers originally coming from abroad . Of what nature this material was and what introductions were made later form a subject by itself.

It was probably noticed at an early date that the crop was suffering from degeneration . Formerly this was thought to be due to the continuous vegetative propagation
