Pot-pourri, más que una novela con trama desarrollada, es ante todo una farsa de la alta sociedad porteña. En segundo lugar cuenta la infidelidad de un joven matrimonio, Juan y María, practicada por ambos, aunque extrañamente (o como sería normal en aquella sociedad) sólo se critica a la mujer por su inconstancia y búsqueda de aventuras. Esta obra, publicada por primera vez en 1881, sorprende por una curiosa y por entonces poco corriente mezcla de elementos literarios. De todos modos, el tono es muy argentino, aunque más no sea por la ligereza de la prosa, emparentada con la de Mansilla por su declarada condición de «causerie». No es casual el subtítulo, «Silbidos de un vago», que da la sensación de que el autor quisiera minimizar la importancia de su obra, darle la apariencia de una efusión gratuita.
