✦ Synopsis
Gross were directly involved in killing CWNDs. From 1945 there was little societal awareness for CWNDs. They received neither social-help nor proper medical assistance. Information about disabilities was nonexistent. CWNDs were hidden within their families or kept isolated in institutions without specific therapies. Andreas Rett entered pediatrics in 1950 and was soon intrigued by epilepsy and developmental disorders. His interest developed into a mission to devote his life to CWNDs and improve their predicament. In 1956 Dr. Rett opened a unique facility for CWNDs that gradually became a notable habilitation centre with psychologists, therapists, educators, and clinicians working collaboratively. Rett also fostered parent support organizations. He criticized euthanasia but collaborated with H.Gross in a study on the victims' brains. Conclusions: Health professionals are never immune to political pressure; they have responsibilities to advocate for persons with disabilities and be vigilant for threats to this population.
